Shot Officer Ties Tourniquet On Leg, Goes Back In To Rescue Hostage

10/15/2019 4:30:00 PM

Lower Swatara Township, PA – A police officer who was shot while responding to a domestic dispute call on Monday night tied a tourniquet on his own leg and went back in to help rescue a hostage after he was hit.

The incident began when officers responded to a call for a man holding a woman against her will at a trailer park on Bentley Lane near the Middletown line in Dauphin County, the Patriot-News reported.

Lower Swatara Township Police Chief Jeffrey Vargo said the officers were fired upon by the suspect as soon as they stepped into the house.

“Almost immediately upon entering the residence, the officers were met with gunfire,” Chief Vargo said. “One officer sustained an injury, he was shot in the leg.”

The chief said that Lower Swatara Township Police Officer Timothy Shea sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, but he didn’t let that stop him, the Patriot-News reported.

Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said that Officer Shea applied a tourniquet to his own leg and followed his partner back inside the home “in an act of great bravery.”

Chardo said that Officer Shea and Officer Joshua Malott were able to rescue the woman who was being held hostage and got her out of the house safely, the Patriot-News reported.

Chief Vargo said that’s when the hostage situation turned into a “barricaded gunman” situation.

The suspect fired on police and the officers returned fire.

The Dauphin County Crisis Team responded to the scene and were able to take the gunman – later identified as Andrew Park – into custody at about 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, according to the Patriot-News.

Officer Shea was transported to the hospital and treated for wounds that were not believed to be life threatening.

Chief Vargo said the suspect was also transported to the hospital but said the gunman had not been shot, the Patriot-News reported.

Chardo said charges, including aggravated assault, were pending against Park.

Officer Shea joined the Lower Swatara Township Police Department as a patrol officer on Jan. 2, the same day that Chief Vargo was sworn in as police chief, according to the Press & Journal.
