Officer Safety Techniques, Including Cover, Concealment, and Time 10.00 hours
PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE: This class is intended to familiarize students with the use of pistol optics, often referred to as Red Dot Optics, or RDOs. This two-day, 16-hour end user course is designed to introduce officers to use of the RDO and to facilitate their transition from the use of traditional iron sights.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This class will familiarize students with the use of pistol optics and ensure they attain a level of marksmanship that will allow them to meet state mandated firearms training standards while using an RDO and qualify to carry an optic equipped pistol as a duty weapon. Specific drills are introduced to make the student familiar and more comfortable with a new sight system. Specific issues addressed are finding the dot, tracking dot, and malfunctions that are specific to the RDO equipped pistols. One-handed and support hand shooting will be addressed, as well as low light shooting and decision-making drills. The training will conclude by requiring students to successfully pass the state qualification course for handguns.  Topics to be addressed include:

  • Handgun fundamentals, to include grip, trigger press, and shooting platform.
  • Proper methods of presenting the handgun from both the holster and ready pistol.
  • How to locate and track the dot.
  • Marksmanship and shot cadence at various distances.
  • Learning to overcome an optic malfunction.
COURSE GOALS:

  • Introduce students to shooting while utilizing a pistol optic (RDO) in lieu of traditional iron sights
  • Provide students with the necessary instruction and skill practice to ensure skill proficiency using a pistol optic
  • Training students to avoid “dot focus” and to center on target focus
  • Ensuring students can utilize alternate sighting methods should their pistol optic fail
  • Provide the necessary information and skill development so that the students are able to pass the state mandated firearms qualification while using a pistol optic

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

  • Optic equipped pistol
  • Minimum 3 magazines
  • Duty belt, holster, magazine pouches, etc.
  • Kevlar vest
  • Eye & ear protection
  • 500 rounds ammunition
